DSC Youth Career Awareness Bootcamp expands a legacy of developing young talent
JANS – Mississippi’s greatest untapped resource has never been oil, cotton, or timber. It has always been its people. And this summer, a new generation of young Mississippians stepped forward to prove it.
The Dependable Source Corp (DSC) Center for Community & Workforce Development successfully completed its DSC Works Youth Career Awareness Bootcamp, held July 13-24, 2026, in Jackson. Thirteen students, ages 15 to 18, spent two transformative weeks gaining hands-on exposure to high-demand careers, building real-world skills, and connecting with working professionals across some of Mississippi’s most vital industries. The program was free to all participants.
The Stakes Are Real
The data makes the significance of this program clear. Mississippi currently holds the lowest labor force participation rate in the nation at 53.9%, according to a report by the nonprofit Empower Mississippi. That figure is not a verdict on the character of Mississippians – it is a signal that career pathways have not been built broadly enough, or early enough. Nationally, youth unemployment for those ages 16 to 24 reached 10.8% in July 2025, more than double the national average. Meanwhile, a 2025 U.S. Chamber of Commerce report found that 84% of hiring managers say most high school graduates are not prepared to enter the workforce, and 89% believe hands-on experience is more valuable than formal education alone.
The good news: this is a solvable problem, and programs like this bootcamp are proving it. Research from the Brookings Institution confirms that work-based learning experiences during high school help young people from low-income and minority backgrounds secure higher-quality jobs by age 30, with earnings averaging 11% higher than peers who had no career-connected learning. For Mississippi, where every economic gain matters, that kind of early intervention pays dividends for families, communities, and the state’s long-term competitiveness.
What the Bootcamp
Delivered
The DSC Works Youth Career Awareness Bootcamp introduced participants to five of Mississippi’s most vital and growing industries: Automotive Technology, Technology, Construction, Transportation & Logistics, and Energy & Utilities. Beyond industry exposure, the program developed the whole young professional – building the leadership, communication, and workplace readiness skills that employers consistently rank as their top priorities in entry-level hires.
Thirteen participants completed the program, representing all school districts in the area – including home school districts – each receiving personalized mentorship and a genuine connection to working professionals in their fields of interest.
31 Years of Opening Doors
The bootcamp is the latest chapter in a remarkable Mississippi success story. DSC was founded in October 1995 by Willie Jones, who set out with a singular purpose: connect Mississippians to good jobs. What began as a driver staffing and placement firm grew into a full-service workforce development organization that has trained and placed Mississippians across transportation, technology, construction, healthcare, and beyond. In 2000, Jones made history as the first African American woman in Mississippi to establish a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training school – a milestone born not from ambition alone, but from necessity: when qualified drivers were hard to find, she built the pipeline herself.
More than three decades later, that same instinct drives the Youth Career Awareness Bootcamp. The bootcamp itself grows directly out of DSC’s long-running NextGen Trucking program – a youth-focused initiative that has connected young Mississippians to careers in transportation for years. Recognizing that today’s young people need exposure to a broader range of opportunities, DSC expanded the NextGen model to encompass five high-demand industries, giving rise to the Career Awareness Bootcamp as its most ambitious expression yet.
DSC today boasts a 91% job placement rate, partnerships with more than 20 employers across six industries, and a mission that has never wavered.
Jones has been recognized as one of Mississippi’s Top CEOs, a recipient of the Candace Award for Economic Development, and most recently named 2026 Woman of the Year by the Mule Train Historical Society – honors that reflect a career built entirely on the belief that workforce development changes lives. “Good workforce development that leads to better paying jobs and a highly skilled workforce uplifts people, families, communities, and the Mississippi economy,” she has said. “We didn’t set out to run a school. We set out to connect Mississippians to good jobs – and that is exactly what we’ve done, longer than we’ve done anything else.”
A Graduation
Worth Celebrating
The bootcamp concluded with a Graduation Ceremony on Friday, July 24, 2026, where parents, families, and community members gathered to celebrate the achievements of this year’s participants. The event featured an inspiring address by invited speaker Stephen Brown, known as 5th Child – Jackson-based Hip Hop artist, nonprofit leader, and passionate advocate for community empowerment and education. Brown’s presence underscored a central message of the bootcamp: that the voices, experiences, and aspirations of young Mississippians belong at the center of the state’s workforce conversation.

The bootcamp’s success was made possible by the generosity of sponsors who share DSC’s belief that investing in young people is investing in Mississippi’s future.
