Drummer Maya Kyles delivers the beat

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Maya Kyles consistently delivers the beat with precision, embodying the consummate studio musician.

At 32 years old, Maya Kyles has built a reputation in a male-dominated field as the drummer who gets the call when a drummer is needed in the studio. She says, “I live by the motto, always be confident as a musician, but never be unprepared. I know that preparation is key, and that’s what I stand on as a female who works with mostly males.”

Maya Kyles is a dynamic drummer and musician based in Jackson, MS, with over 20 years of experience across multiple genres. Known for deep grooves, expressive feel, and professional precision, Maya has shared the stage with artists such as Raphael Semmes, Vasti Jackson, Jarekus Singleton, Jamell Richardson, Eden Brent, and Dexter Allen. Whether in the studio or on stage, she brings the soul of Mississippi to every performance, delivering sound that moves and inspires. “You must be ready when the call comes. Studio time must be paid for; therefore, you don’t go into the studio wasting time by being unprepared,” says Kyles.

Maya Kyles is a native of Jackson, Mississippi, and a 2011 graduate of Callaway High School with performance studies at Berkley and Jackson State University. She started playing drums at age 9 and has since added guitar as a secondary instrument, with vocals now as part of her repertoire. She lists Bernard Purdie as her favorite drummer and has been inspired by Art Blakey.

“I’ve been surrounded by my musical family that includes my grandmother, Ms. Sharron Kyles, who is a vocalist with the world-renowned Mississippi Mass Choir. Additionally, my father was a member of the Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South as a tuba player from 1991-1993. Having been influenced by my musical family, I have developed a love for a wide range of music genres; however, soul music is my favorite. I fell in love with the drums from the very first time I experienced that whole-body feeling that the drums give you. The drum encompasses all aspects of the human anatomy,” said Kyles.

Working with many different musicians, Kyles has traveled the world as a percussionist, visiting and performing in France, Germany, Norway, Romania, Poland, Canada, and the United Kingdom. At present, she works as a full-time musician and is looking forward to returning to teaching soon. “I love traveling to other countries and experiencing different cultures,” commented Kyles.

Kyles often sits in during sets on Blue Monday at Hal and Mal’s with the Central Mississippi Blues Society Band when she is not on the road or doing studio work.

Kyles said, “My future plans include adding more vocals and continuing to provide professional studio work as a drummer, along with songwriting.”

When asked what advice she would give young drummers, Maya said, “I would tell aspiring drummers, especially females, to always be confident in themselves as musicians. Don’t let anyone define you on and off the stage.”
