Driven by purpose: Sir Johnathan Rucker’s road to community impact

In a state where access and opportunity are often unevenly distributed, Sir Johnathan Rucker is carving out his own lane, literally. The Navy veteran, former elected official, and proud Mississippian has turned years of public service and personal struggle into fuel for his latest venture – a transportation company called It’s Time Travels, LLC.

Rucker’s journey isn’t just one of business ownership. It’s one of service and community impact. From his early start in public service to his grounding in military discipline, to the adversity of growing up in a household touched by addiction and tragedy, Rucker’s life has been a testament to resilience.

“Nobody handed me anything growing up. I had to get it out the mud and now I’m building something that can help others rise too,” he said.

From Elected Office to Entrepreneurship

Rucker made history as one of the youngest elected officials in Yazoo City, stepping into the role of alderman with a deep passion for helping people. That passion was planted early on, as he served on the Mayor’s Youth Council while in high school and continued learning about government at Jackson State University, where he earned a master’s in public policy.

“I just always had a heart to serve people because of my upbringing,” Rucker said. “There were people who looked out for me and I’ve always wanted to return that favor.”

Being the youngest voice on the board came with its share of challenges, but also shaped his leadership style. While balancing full time work and night classes, he realized the importance of sharpening his skill set and expanding his impact.

But public office isn’t without its pressures. After running for mayor and losing his alderman seat, Rucker took time to reflect. Instead of stepping away from service altogether, he chose to serve in a different way, through business.

The Birth of It’s Time Travels

With his company, It’s Time Travels, LLC, Rucker is addressing a unique but critical need in Mississippi’s underserved transportation space. The business offers party bus rentals, travel accommodations for family reunions and events, and safe, community focused travel options. The services are especially attractive to those feeling uncomfortable using ride share apps or similar services.

“A lot of people have poured into me for so long, and I said, ‘You know what? It’s time to do something for myself,’” he said. “But not just for me, for the community, too. That’s why I named it It’s Time Travels. The motto is, ‘Where every time is your time.’”

While often labeled as a “party bus,” the vehicle’s purpose is much broader. Rucker has already secured bookings for family functions, group tours, and local events. More importantly, he’s offering an option for safe, reliable travel in communities frequently overlooked.

His long term vision is bold but clear. He is working to build a fleet of three to five buses, create local jobs, and establish a transportation company rooted in dignity, consistency, and care.

Military Values

Rucker’s years in the Navy deeply influenced how he operates his business today. He cites the Navy’s core values as the framework for how he approaches clients and responsibilities – honor, courage, and commitment.

“If it means staying up until 1 a.m. to make sure a booking is right, I’ll do it,” he said. “The military taught me to pay attention to detail, to finish what I start, and to be committed to people.”

Operating as a one man powerhouse, Rucker handles scheduling, bookings, customer service, and marketing himself. While he’s looking forward to growing his team, he remains proud of the groundwork he’s laying, especially because he’s doing it without loans or outside investors.

“I didn’t take out any small business loans,” he said. “Everything has come out of pocket. I’m working full time, I’m a 100% disabled veteran, and I’m grinding every day to build something solid.”

Support and Self Reliance

Despite his drive, Rucker admits support hasn’t always come easily, especially from local institutions. One example still weighs heavily. The local newspaper in his hometown declined to cover his business ribbon cutting unless he paid for it.

“It’s important to have people like the Jackson Advocate who will spotlight people no matter where they’re from or what they look like,” he said. “Our stories matter. Our businesses matter.”

Rucker’s story is one of faith and focus. Whether he returns to public office or grows his transportation empire, one thing is certain. He’s not slowing down anytime soon.

“I’m not done with public service. But right now, I’m focused on building something better than what I had. That’s how we create change from the ground up.”
