Dr. Victor Sutton honored at his retirement party
JANS – Dr. Victor D. Sutton, Mississippi’s visionary leader in public health and community engagement, was honored in grand style at his retirement party March 27, 2025, at the Stellar Venue in Ridgeland.
For over three decades, Dr. Sutton has been a driving force in public health, tirelessly championing equity, wellness, and community empowerment. His journey began in 1990 as an Administrative Assistant for the Bureau of State Capitol Police in Jackson, MS. Even in these early days, his passion for service was evident, setting the stage for a career defined by impactful leadership and transformative initiatives.
Dr. Sutton’s early professional experiences, ranging from an Intern Project Assistant for the Mississippi Institute for Small Towns to a Consultant for the Mississippi Center for Technology, honed his ability to foster change at both grassroots and policy levels. His role as an intern Program Officer for the Foundation for MidSouth further deepened his commitment to strengthening communities.
In 1994, he took on the challenge of ensuring fair administrative processes as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Mississippi Department of Human Services, later advancing to a Senior Administrative Analyst position with the Department of Labor in Albany, NY. Returning to Mississippi, Dr. Sutton immersed himself in community driven initiatives, serving as Project Director for the West Jackson Community Development Corporation and lending his expertise as a consultant for the Mississippi Department of Human Services. His work as Program Director for The Community Organization for Health Awareness underscored his commitment to empowering underserved populations with knowledge and resources for better health outcomes.
Dr. Sutton’s most enduring impact has been through his leadership at the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH). Since joining MSDH in 1999 as Division Director for the Office of Health Promotion, he has been at the forefront of initiatives that have shaped public health policies across the state. His tenure as Director of the Office of Preventive Health and Health Equity (2002-2022) marked a period of remarkable progress, where he championed statewide health promotion strategies and advanced equity-driven solutions for historically marginalized communities.
Beyond his role at MSDH, Dr. Sutton has made significant contributions to research and community engagement, serving since 2018 as the Principal Investigator for the Jackson Heart Study Community Engagement Center – one of the nation’s most comprehensive studies on African American heart health. In 2022, he was appointed Chief of Community Health at MSDH, a testament to his leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication to improving health outcomes for all Mississippians.
Dr. Sutton’s career is an example of the power of vision, persistence, and passion in the field of public health. His expertise in program administration, policy development, and health promotion has left an indelible mark on Mississippi and beyond. Whatever the next chapter brings, his mission will always be the same – to bridge health disparities, uplift communities, and create a future where quality healthcare is accessible to all.
