Dr. Kyairra Thomas appointed principal of Canton Elementary

Dr. Kyairra Thomas has been appointed the principal of Canton Elementary School. She has over 12 years of experience as an administrator, interventionist, and teacher. She recently served as the assistant principal of Reuben B. Myers Canton School of Arts and Sciences, where she was committed to bringing new opportunities for students to learn, grow, and thrive within the school community. Dr. Thomas has served as an interventionist and 4th grade teacher at Goodloe Elementary. Before coming to the district, she was an 8th grade teacher at Whitten Middle School in Jackson and a lead teacher at the Capital City Alternative School.

“With a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, student-centered learning, and cultivating a positive, inclusive school culture, I am eager to bring my leadership experience and passion for education to Canton Elementary School. Throughout my career, I have served in both classroom and administrative roles, giving me a well-rounded perspective on school leadership. My leadership philosophy centers on collaboration, equity, and high expectations. I am deeply committed to creating environments where both students and staff feel supported and empowered to thrive,” says Dr. Thomas.

Dr. Thomas is a proud alumna of Tougaloo College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, followed by a Master of Arts in Education and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Belhaven University. She also holds a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Mississippi College. 

She says she is deeply grateful to be part of such a vibrant, purpose-driven community where collaboration, growth, and student success are at the heart of all we do. She looks forward to a dynamic year of meaningful partnerships and shared dedication as she continues to equip CES scholars for a future filled with promise, purpose, and limitless potential.
