CDF highlights of 30th Anniversary celebration, freedom schools’ success
JANS – The Children’s Defense Fund-Southern Regional Office recently observed its 30th Anniversary. The occasion doubled as a celebration of its Jackson Public Schools’ Freedom Schools Program.
“The two events highlighted the CDF’s longstanding and continued commitment to social justice advocacy for children and young people in Jackson and the greater region,” commented Oleta Fitzgerald, CDF-Southern Regional Office Executive Director. “Although the celebrations took place in Jackson, Mississippi, they reflect the organization’s commitment to improving the economic, education, and health outcomes of all children and young people in the region,” she added.
“A Celebration of Joy” was held at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to honor the office’s three decades of working to improve the well-being of children in Mississippi and across the South. The event brought together longtime community leaders, youth advocates, and young people to celebrate their shared commitment to future generations of leaders.
CDF-SRO also recognized the outstanding contributions of two Mississippi Freedom Summer participants, Rev. Rims Barber and Dr. Robert Smith, who have advanced the movement for child well-being with its Advocate for Joy award. Youth advocate Iesha Hayes was honored with the Samuel Halperin Youth Service Award.
CDF’s national President and CEO, Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson, was on hand for the festivities.
CDF Freedom Schools provide summer and after-school enrichment through a research-based, culturally responsive program that supports K–12 students and their families through high-quality academic and character-building activities. Each year, CDF Freedom Schools hold National Day of Social Action (NDSA) events to encourage scholars to lead civic engagement activities in their communities.
CDF’s Freedom Schools’ NDSA was held June 27, 2025, at Cardozo Middle School Auditorium, 3180 McDowell Road, Jackson, MS. This year, JPS scholars shared highlights from their summer enrichment experiences and were recognized for their enthusiasm, leadership, and active participation.
National youth leaders were among the attendees, including Dr. Kristal Moore Clemons, CDF Freedom Schools National Director; Shaquite Pegues, CDF Freedom Schools Managing Director; and Jalaya Lile Dunn, CDF Freedom Schools former interim National Director. “Public education is a public good essential to empowering children and young people to fully participate in civic life,” stated Dr. Clemons.
