Bishop Dr. Jimmie R. Horton honored
JANS – Metrocom NAACP of Davenport, IA held its annual Freedom Fund Banquet September 27, 2025, at Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose University (Davenport, IA). This year’s theme was “A Fierce Urgency of Now.” Keynote speaker was Henry Hamilton III.
A number of community stalwarts were honored, including Jackson native and Founding Pastor of Gospel Mission Temple in Davenport, Bishop Dr. Jimmie R. Horton who received the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the highest honor presented by the NAACP which recognizes an individual whose lifelong dedication, leadership, and service have made a profound and lasting impact on civil rights, social justice, and the advancement of the Black community in the Quad Cities.
Recipients of this award embody the values of the NAACP through their unwavering commitment to equity, advocacy, and community empowerment. Their legacy of service has paved the way for future generations, ensuring that the fight for freedom, justice, and equality continues.
Bishop Horton was born and reared in Jackson, MS. He is a graduate of Jim Hill High School, holds a Master’s degree from Jackson State University and a Doctorate of Divinity from St. Thomas Christian University. Bishop Horton serves on the Executive Board of Bishops in the Full Gospel Church. He is a best selling author of “Live the Unlimited Life.” He taught for 25 years in the Davenport Public School system. He is married to Evangelist, Lady Michelle Horton, a retired educator, and they are the proud parents of Dr. Jimmie Jr., Faith, and Avery Horton.
