JANS – On Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee resigned. She was absent during this week’s city council meeting and only participated remotely over the past few months. This year has seen Lee face public scrutiny on a number of fronts. Mayor Chokwe Lumumba released the following statement: “Today, I was informed of the resignation of Councilwoman Angelique Lee from the Jackson City Council. While I am saddened to see her step down, I fully respect her decision and support her in her future endeavors.
“On behalf of the entire city, I want to express my deep gratitude for her service and dedication. We will miss her leadership on the council, but we know she will continue to be a passionate advocate for our community in other ways.
“The process to fill the vacancy on the City Council will begin immediately, and I encourage all interested and qualified individuals to consider serving in this important role.
“I wish Councilwoman Lee all the best and thank her once again for her service to the City of Jackson.”
The city council is required to meet within 10 days to set the date for a special election for someone to replace Lee as Ward 2 councilman.
