Alvin Edney appointed Interim Executive Director of Child Nutrition at JPS

JANS – Alvin Edney was recently appointed as the Interim Executive Director of Child Nutrition for Jackson Public Schools, where he provides executive leadership and oversight for all districtwide nutrition operations. With a strong foundation in public health and more than two decades of experience in food safety, regulatory compliance, and program administration, he is committed to ensuring that every student has access to safe, nutritious, and appealing meals that support health, equity, and academic success.

Prior to his appointment, Edney served as the district’s Director of Child Nutrition, ensuring compliance across the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Summer Food Service Program, and related federal and state initiatives. His earlier tenure as an area supervisor included leadership of 12–18 school sites, supervision of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, large-scale equipment procurement, and administration of the Manager Training Program.

Edney also brings extensive statewide regulatory experience from his roles as a Food Service Supervisor III with the Mississippi Department of Education – monitoring and supporting NSLP compliance – and as a Regional Supervisor/Public Health Environmentalist III with the Mississippi State Department of Health, where he enforced public health regulations across a five-county region.

Edney holds a Master of Public Health in occupational and environmental health and safety from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Alcorn State University. He maintains multiple certifications in food safety, inspection, and emergency response and is the recipient of numerous honors for leadership, academic excellence, and professional service.
