Tennis is the world’s healthiest sport

Playing tennis just three hours per week can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by 56%. A 2018 study done in Copenhagen that followed more than 8,500 participants over a 25-year period found that of all the sports that can increase life expectancy over a sedentary lifestyle, tennis topped the list with 9.7 years making it the world’s healthiest sport. Inspired by this research and its desire to get more people playing tennis, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) introduced Red Ball Tennis. Red Ball Tennis (RBT) is a fun social experience designed to bring new players and former players back into the game. RBT is played with modified equipment and scoring that makes it easier to learn.
In celebration of National Tennis Month, Friends of Battlefield Park NJTL, a non-profit youth development and educational organization, will host Hit to Be Fit Day on May 10, 2025, at Battlefield Park, Dorothy Vest Tennis Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. No prior tennis experience is required. In 10 minutes or less, you will be playing red ball tennis. The easier scoring format and less competitive environment makes RBT a great way for beginners to play with their tennis friends just for the fun of it! Also, RBT is a progressive way for new players to improve at their own pace if they want to eventually play traditional tennis with the yellow ball.
Millions of people who have never played the sport of tennis enjoy the game. Many adults tell me that playing tennis is on their bucket list or that they “always” wanted to try tennis. If you are one of these people and even if you are not, now is your time to give tennis a try.
Start your journey towards better health. Come hit to be fit! Join the fun and bring your friends Saturday, May 10, 2025, to Battlefield Park, Dorothy Vest Tennis Center. There is no cost. Wear comfortable workout clothing and tennis shoes. Bring a towel. Water and healthy refreshments will be provided. Friends of Battlefield will provide tennis equipment.
Participants are encouraged to contribute to Friends of Battlefield Park Foundation NJTL. All donations will help support our junior tennis and education programs.
