On March 27, 2025, Rust College celebrated Women’s History Month with an uplifting luncheon hosted and sponsored by Carolyn Turner, Director of Campus Enrichment and Student Activities. The event brought together women faculty and staff members for an afternoon of inspiration, reflection, and encouragement.
The luncheon opened with a warm welcome and an opening prayer from Mary LeSueur, Executive Director of Public Relations, setting the tone for a meaningful gathering. Dr. Doris Ward, Vice President for Academic Affairs, extended greetings to the attendees, acknowledging the contributions of the women of Rust College and their invaluable role in shaping the institution.
The beautifully arranged buffet-style luncheon featured elegantly set tables with tablecloths and charming centerpieces, creating a festive yet intimate atmosphere for the occasion.
Ms. Turner introduced the keynote speaker, Senator Angela Turner-Ford, who represents Mississippi’s District 16 in the State Senate. Speaking virtually, Senator Turner-Ford delivered an empowering message, encouraging the women of Rust College to consider running for public office. She emphasized the importance of female representation in government, stating, “Women have a perspective that needs to be heard. And it’s not going to be heard in a loud enough voice if you don’t have enough women saying it.”
Senator Turner-Ford urged the attendees to actively seek out and support women who have the potential to lead, stating, “As a legislator myself, as we move throughout the community, we need to make an effort to identify women that we believe can help the body and just encourage them. You can do this, you can get involved, you should get involved. You have what it takes.”
Following her speech, Senator Turner-Ford engaged the audience by answering questions, fostering a dynamic and insightful discussion. Attendees appreciated the opportunity to interact with her directly, gaining further understanding into the importance of women’s involvement and leadership in politics and governance.
As the luncheon concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared commitment to elevating the voices of women in all spheres of life.
