JPS welcomes Burbette Taylor to the Board of Trustees

JANS – Burbette Taylor is the newest member of the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees. Representing Ward 2, she fills a key vacancy, bringing the Board to a full slate with one representative serving from each of the city’s seven wards. Taylor was recently sworn in by Attorney Larrissa Harris at the JPS Central Office headquarters.

Taylor is a dedicated education professional with a strong background in compliance, program administration, and instructional leadership. With experience spanning both the public and private sectors, she has demonstrated expertise in overseeing state and federal education programs, ensuring compliance, and fostering scholar achievement.

Currently serving as a Compliance and Monitoring Specialist for the Mississippi Department of Education, Taylor conducts compliance reviews and provides technical assistance to school districts, supporting the effective implementation of federally funded programs. Prior to this role, she spent nearly two decades with Hinds County School District as a State and Federal Programs Director and Assistant Principal, where she played a key role in planning, implementing, and evaluating state and federal education initiatives.

Taylor began her career in education as a Mathematics and Career Discovery Teacher at Rowan Middle School in the Jackson Public School District, helping scholars build strong math foundations and develop career readiness skills.

A lifelong learner, Taylor holds a Master of Science in Teaching with a concentration in Mathematics and an Administrative Certification from Jackson State University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Education, and Computer Science from South Carolina State University.

Active in professional organizations, Taylor is a member of the Mississippi Association of Federal Educational Program Administrators and the National Association of Federal Educational Program Administrators. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
