It will feature film screenings, live performances, masterclasses, and intimate conversations honoring and highlighting the profound contributions of Black women artists while shining a spotlight on their artistic landscape that is global but is centric to a place like Mississippi.
This gathering of Black artists, which Ellis-Taylor is calling a convocation, is a large assembly of artists that is unprecedented. It is punctuated by being held on the Tougaloo campus. This campus is known for producing many of the world’s notable creators of film, literature, and musical theater, and impacted the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.
Writer and actor Ellis-Taylor will present this special event, dedicated to venerating Black women in the arts. The imaginative work of Black women is atomic, irreducible, and revolutionary. The experience will bring extraordinary artists into the community with students, filmmakers, authors, and cultural leaders who can demystify creative industries and open new career pathways.
This landmark celebration launches a vibrant new tradition in Jackson, Mississippi, dedicated to elevating the creative voices of Black women across generations. The event promises an inspiring roster of talent, including renowned film director Kasi Lemmons (Harriet, Eve’s Bayou), award-winning producer Sidra Smith (Sylvie’s Love), and acclaimed actress Sanaa Lathan, who will lead dynamic masterclasses.
Literary presentations by Addie Citchens, Tai Freedom Ford, and Imani Perry will offer powerful insights through their written work. Attendees will also experience compelling film screenings, including All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Celestine, and Earth Mama. Rounding out the celebration are intimate conversations and a thought-provoking Q&A featuring Ellis-Taylor, Raven Jackson, and Lishan Az, offering a deeper look into their artistic journeys.
