In May 2025, Dr. Krystal Martin, the founder of Greater Greener Gloster, received a $25,000 grant from the American Public Health Association (APHA). It is entitled “Building Strategic Communications Capacity Among Community-Based Organizations Working to Create Healthier Environments.”
Greater Greener Gloster is a grassroots nonprofit organization. Its mission is to transform lives, create opportunities, and build pathways positively impacting individuals in rural and urban communities.
Dr. Martin reports the grant enables Greater Greener Gloster to receive specialized training on developing better communication skills to inform and engage the community in Gloster, Mississippi. The group was trained through three virtual cohort sessions on effective communication with each other, the media, and external entities. They shared their stories and experiences with environmental issues, including industrial pollution from commercial operations in rural areas like Gloster. The cohort training was completed on July 31, 2025.
Because of the exchange of information and learning occurring during the cohort training, Greater Greener Gloster’s final report to the APHA resulted in Dr. Martin being selected as a presenter at the APHA 2025 Annual Meeting & Expo in Washington, DC from November 2-5, 2025.. This event anticipates attendance by 12,000 public health professionals from around the globe.
Dr. Martin states, “I have accepted the invitation to present. I will share insights from my community in Gloster, Mississippi, regarding air pollution and its public health impact on residents.”
