Historic milestone: National Association of University charters first branch in Mississippi
JANS – In a landmark moment for education and women’s empowerment, the National Association of University Women (NAUW) has officially chartered its first branch in the state of Mississippi. This historic milestone marks a significant expansion of NAUW’s mission to uplift, educate, and empower women across the United States.
The Mississippi branch, located in Jackson, will serve as a transformative hub for academic excellence, leadership development, and community engagement. As the first of its kind in the state, the new campus will offer a wide range of degree programs and professional opportunities, with a strong emphasis on equity, innovation, and the advancement of women from all backgrounds.
“This is more than just a new branch – it’s a powerful symbol of progress in our state,” said Erica Reed, President of NAUW Central Mississippi. “By bringing the National Association of University Women to Mississippi, we are honoring the voices of generations who fought for representation and opportunity for women and girls in the South. Today, we begin a new chapter – one defined by opportunity, leadership, and empowerment.”
Mississippi has long played a complex and pivotal role in the history of education and civil rights. The establishment of the NAUW branch signals a renewed commitment to building inclusive futures, particularly in regions that have been historically underserved.
The chartering ceremony will take place on August 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Jackson Medical Mall, located at 350 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave., Jackson, MS 39213. The event will feature distinguished local leaders, educators, students, families, and national NAUW leadership, including the President and Sectional Vice President. The public is warmly invited to attend and celebrate this groundbreaking achievement.
