The Bean Path and Briarwood Arts Center partner to launch third OATS location, expanding technology education
JANS – The Bean Path and Briarwood Arts Center (BAC) have partnered to launch the third location of Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), expanding free technology education opportunities for adults ages 55 and older in North Jackson.
The expansion brings OATS to Briarwood Arts Center, increasing access to technology education for older adults while continuing The Bean Path’s mission of bridging the digital divide across Mississippi. In addition to serving participants in Jackson, The Bean Path also offers OATS programming in Canton, Mississippi, ensuring more older adults have access to free technology training close to home.
Classes started July 16, but enrollment is ongoing and happens every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at BAC’s 614 Briarwood Drive, Jackson, location. The classes are workshop based and participants receive hands-on instruction in using smartphones, tablets, computers, online services, and other everyday technology. This particular version of OATS does require some tech knowledge. Beginners need to enroll in the OATS program at The Bean Path.
“This expansion is about making technology education more accessible,” said Erica Archie, Director of the OATS Program at The Bean Path. “Many older adults want to confidently use the technology they encounter every day, but they simply need a welcoming place to ask questions and learn at their own pace. By bringing OATS to Briarwood Arts Center, we’re making those opportunities more convenient for residents in North Jackson while continuing our mission of ensuring no one is left behind in today’s digital world.”
The Bean Path has offered the OATS program since 2024. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to removing barriers to technology education by bringing programming directly into neighborhoods where it is needed most.
“This was another opportunity for us to join forces and collaborate on a community partnership that expands OATS programming to the north side of Jackson,” said Stephen Brown, Founder of Briarwood Arts Center and a member of The Bean Path’s Board of Directors. “Many residents simply don’t have transportation to attend programs in other parts of the city. We’ve had such a strong demand from our community for a program like OATS that bringing it to Briarwood Arts Center was a no-brainer. It aligns perfectly with our mission of providing educational opportunities that strengthen our community while making valuable technology resources more accessible.”
OATS focuses on practical technology skills that empower older adults to navigate an increasingly digital world with confidence. Participants receive hands-on instruction in a supportive environment, learning skills that help them communicate with loved ones, access online services, manage everyday tasks, and safely use technology.
