Remember, Lest We Forget Florence O. Weathersby
Florence O. Weathersby, affectionately known as a “flourishing flower,” budded into this world on February 11, 1932, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She transitioned June 7, 2026. Her life was celebrated June 13, 2026, at Pilgrim Home MBC in Greenville, MS. Pastor John Johnson officiated.
Florence was born to her loving parents, Spencer Odom and Mable Watts, and was the eldest of five siblings, two brothers and two sisters, each bound together by a deep and enduring family love.
At an early age, Florence professed her love for Christ and became an active member of Progressive Baptist Church in Monroe, Louisiana. Her passion for music blossomed through her faithful service as a devoted choir member.
Florence received her elementary and high school education in the Monroe, Louisiana, public school system, where she also discovered her love for basketball. She continued her academic journey at Arkansas A&M, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, she began her lifelong calling as an educator in Dermott, Arkansas, serving as an elementary teacher and assistant basketball coach.
In 1956, Florence joined the Greenville Public School District as an elementary teacher at Julia L. Armstrong School. During this time, she met the love of her life, Davis Weathersby. Their union in holy matrimony marked the beginning of 67 beautiful years together.
After marrying, Florence and Davis united with Pilgrim Home Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in the choir, Sunday School, and mission ministry. Her love for God radiated through her compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication to serving others. She lived a life of selflessness, always placing the needs of family, friends, and community before her own. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, godmother, aunt, and friend whose influence will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
Florence was a proud and active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated for more than 73 years, and a committed member of the Progressive Arts and Civics Club for over 60 years.
Her leadership, grace, and service earned her numerous awards and recognitions from civic, professional, and community organizations.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mable Watts Jones; father, Spencer Odom; stepfather, Henry Jones Sr.; brothers, Henry Jones Jr. and Malvin Jones; and sister, Joan Allen.
Cherishing her legacy are her devoted husband, Davis Weathersby; her son, Marlon (Cathy) Weathersby of Jacksonville, AR; her sister, Ira Jean Allen of Monroe, LA; brother-in-law, Isaac Weathersby of New Orleans, LA; sister-in-law, Maxcine Weathersby of Little Rock, AR; and her grandson, Dominique (Jennifer) Wallace of Lexington, KY.
