Felicia Kelly-Brookins Appointed Local Membership Director for League of Women Voters of Jackson Area
New local membership leader highlights inaugural “Cinnamon Rolls & Civics” student initiative at Tougaloo College during Founders’ Week
JACKSON, Miss. — Felicia Kelly-Brookins has been appointed Local Membership Director for the League of Women Voters of Jackson Area, stepping into the role with a focus on membership growth, community visibility, civic education and stronger engagement with emerging leaders across the Jackson metropolitan area.
Her appointment comes as the local League prepares to expand its outreach to college students through the inaugural LWV Jackson Young Civic Leaders Student Ambassador Initiative. The initiative will launch with “Cinnamon Rolls & Civics” on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Warren Hall Co-op on the campus of Tougaloo College in Jackson.
The event is being held during Tougaloo College’s 157th Founders’ Week, a week that celebrates the institution’s legacy of leadership, education and service. Tougaloo’s 2026 Founders’ Week theme is “Learn, Lead, Serve — 157 Years of Transforming Minds, Developing Leaders, and Advancing Communities.” The college’s official calendar lists Founders’ Week activities from October 4 through October 11, 2026.
“Cinnamon Rolls & Civics is designed to create an inviting space for students to learn more about civic participation, voter education and community leadership,” Kelly-Brookins said. “We want young adults to understand that civic engagement is not limited to election day. Their voices, ideas and leadership matter throughout the year, and there is a place for them in this work.”
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots civic organization that does not support or oppose political parties or candidates. Nationally, the League works to expand voter participation through voter registration, public education, candidate forums, nonpartisan election information and advocacy on civic issues. Membership in the League is open to people who want to participate in its mission of empowering voters and strengthening democratic participation.
The Jackson Area League serves Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties as part of the League of Women Voters of Mississippi. Through local programming, volunteer engagement and voter education, members work to connect residents with reliable civic information and opportunities to participate in public life.
As Local Membership Director, Kelly-Brookins plans to place particular emphasis on welcoming new members, strengthening member involvement and creating more visible pathways for people to take part in League activities. The Membership Committee is also seeking current League members who would like to help with recruitment, member engagement, outreach and special membership initiatives.
The new Young Civic Leaders initiative at Tougaloo is intended to help build a bridge between experienced community advocates and college students who are developing their own civic identities. The October 7 event will give students an opportunity to connect with League members, learn about nonpartisan civic participation and explore ways to become involved in future activities.
“One of my goals is to make membership feel accessible, active and meaningful,” Kelly-Brookins said. “We want people to know that joining the League is not simply adding your name to a list. It is an opportunity to learn, serve, participate and help strengthen the civic life of our communities.”
