Congressman Bennie G. Thompson awarded Presidential Citizens Medal
JANS – On January 2, 2025, in a ceremony at the White House, President Joe Biden awarded Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) the Presidential Citizens Medal. The Presidential Citizens Medal, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, is awarded to citizens of the United States who have performed admirable deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.
“I am honored to receive the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Biden,” stated Rep. Thompson. “From my time as a student in Mississippi at Tougaloo College to the halls of Congress, including my time as the Chairman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol, I have had an unwavering commitment to upholding the Constitution and defending democracy. Throughout my nearly six decades as a public servant, whether on the local or federal level, I have worked to ensure that democratic principles work for all Americans, not just a select few.”
Rep. Thompson also applauded President Biden’s awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to famed civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. “The Presidential Medal of Freedom is a testament to Fannie Lou Hamer’s enduring impact on not only Mississippi but also the entire country,” said Rep. Thompson. “My life was transformed while working on the Fannie Lou Hamer campaign for Congress. I am deeply influenced by her legacy, and I am honored to witness this recognition. I extend my gratitude to President Biden for acknowledging Hamer’s pivotal role in American history and bestowing upon her this well-deserved honor.”
In addition to Hamer, President Biden bestowed the coveted award on 18 other Americans including Denzel Washington and Magic Johnson.
