Dr. Angel Cabrera (president) and Jen Howe (VP of Development for Georgia Tech) learn more about the plans for The Bean Path Tech District from Dr. Nashlie Sephus.

JANS – Dr. Angel Cabrera, president of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), toured The Bean Path and The Bean Path Tech District on Saturday, October 12. Dr. Cabrera was in Jackson visiting with Georgia Tech alumni. Dr. Nashlie Sephus, founder of The Bean Path and developer of The Bean Path Tech District, received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in computer engineering from the university.

“I’ve been so impressed by Dr. Sephus,” said Dr. Angel Cabrera. “Not only because she is a successful engineer and she’s good in technology, but she has this vision of how to use this technology to lift up others. I’ve always heard about how she wanted to make a difference back home. She told me all about it, but I had never seen it. This was a great opportunity for me to finally see her work in action. She is making Georgia Tech so proud. Our mission focuses on how to use technology to make things better for other people and that’s exactly what she is doing.”

The Bean Path is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to create equity in STEAM opportunities by increasing access to tools, knowledge, and networks to underserved communities, particularly in Mississippi. Initiatives include speaker series, free tech consultations, engineering and coding programs for youth, and scholarships/grants for students and community organizations.

The Bean Path Makerspace is a 6,500 sq. ft. facility where local creators can design and execute their own projects with expert guidance and best-in-class equipment. The Bean Path was founded by Dr. Nashlie Sephus, developer of The Bean Path Tech District and the Principal Applied Scientist For Amazon Artificial Intelligence (AI).
