JANS – The Jackson (Hinds) Branch of the NAACP celebrated its 96th Annual Freedom Fund Awards and Scholarship Banquet July 27, 2024. The branch’s signature event was held at the historic M.W. Stringer Masonic Lodge, located at 1072 J.R. Lynch Street, Jackson, MS. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Tashe Allen.
This year’s banquet, themed “Making Our Vote Count,” aligned with the critical juncture of the upcoming Presidential Election in 2024. “As the nation navigates pivotal political landscapes, the NAACP underscores the importance of civic engagement and the empowerment of communities through voting rights,” commented branch president, Nsombi Lambright.
Keynote speaker for the evening was Pamela D.C. Junior, former Director of Two Mississippi Museums. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Junior brings a fervent dedication to bridging historical narratives with contemporary challenges. Her address delivered on the promise to inspire and galvanize attendees towards collective action for positive change.
The annual banquet serves as a platform to honor outstanding individuals for their exemplary service to Jackson and unwavering support of the Jackson (Hinds) NAACP Branch. This year’s banquet chairperson was Queen Hatfield.
This year’s awardees were Pamela D.C. Junior, recipient of the Delores Orey Lifetime Service Award; Javonda Stanton, the John Dixon Community Service Award; Barbara Williams was named the Ineva May Pittman Mother of the Year; the Rankin County NAACP received the President’s Award; and Jaliyah Bell was recognized as a 2024 NAACP National ACT-SO Silver Medal Winner for her art work title “Generations of a Mother’s Promise.”
Furthermore, the Freedom Fund Banquet serves as an occasion to award scholarships to deserving graduating seniors from Jackson Public Schools.
